If the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are going to end their 29-year Grey Cup drought, it won’t be with Matt Nichols at quarterback. Rumblings of Nichols missing the remainder of the 2019 season surfaced Monday, but the Last Word on CFL couldn’t confirm the news.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers officially revealed Thursday evening that Nichols had decided to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. Nichols hurt his shoulder in Week 10 after B.C. Lions’ defensive end Shawn Lemon fell over top of him. The team confirmed Nichols’ surgery was successful.
Matt Nichols finishes his 2019 season with 1,936 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He will become a free agent this off-season.
The Bombers are now left with Chris Streveler and Sean McGuire at quarterback. Winnipeg also added pivot Trevor Knight to their expanded practice roster on Sunday.
In four starts this season, Streveler’s posted a 2-2 record, passing for 616 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions. Streveler’s added another 314 yards on the ground in those starts. He’s also failed to pass for 200 yards in any of the four games.
The Bombers are preparing for a massive game at IG Field against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday night. With Nichols done for the year and Calgary and Saskatchewan inching closer to first place, the race for hosting the West Final is on.
